Currently the company’s chief operating officer, Reuben K. Byrd joined the Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited in 2009. Ensuring the company runs efficiently and meets project deadlines, Reuben K. Byrd also rewrote the company’s apprenticeship program.
In August of 2014, more than 120 applicants showed up to take the entrance examination for the Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited apprenticeship program. A 4 year-long program which has been in existence for 10 years, it offers 12 individuals an opportunity to learn shipyard operation. In addition, selected apprentices will gain access to the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute to fulfill the academic segment of the program. The academic portion is currently pending certification, which will allow apprentices to receive college credit upon completing the program.
